Surgery is a major decision and should always be taken very seriously. As all surgeries carry some risk, the final decision to proceed with surgical treatment takes into consideration the benefit to risk ratio, other available treatments, and the patient’s condition.
Most surgeries in gynecologic practice have been classically performed using a wide surgical cut to the patient’s tummy, what we call “open abdominal surgery”. On the other hand, laparoscopic surgery involves inserting a small camera-scope through the umbilicus and then using miniature instruments to perform simple and complex surgeries on the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. In common terms, this is called “keyhole surgery”.
Laparoscopic surgery for gynecologic conditions offers better magnification for the surgeon and carries lots of advantages for the patient including being less invasive, causing less tissue injury, has smaller incisions, causes less pain and a lower need for analgesics, involves a shorter hospital stay, offers a faster return to work, and is associated with less wound complications.
Most abdominal gynecologic surgeries can be performed using laparoscopy. Examples include excision of ovarian cysts, treating ectopic pregnancy, treatment of endometriosis and pelvic adhesions, removing fibroids (laparoscopic myomectomy), and removal of the uterus (laparoscopic hysterectomy). In certain cases however, classical open abdominal surgery may be a better option.
At our clinic, we will discuss with you, and in detail, which option would best suit your specific case. We will also make sure that your care, before and after surgery, is optimized for best possible results and a healthy recovery.
